08/02/2010 Door to quantitative easing 'left open'The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has "hedged it bets" by leaving the door open to a future increase in quantitative easing, an expert has claimed.

Andrew Smith, KPMG chief economist, noted that while the MPC remained uncertain about the economy, it had to wait and see how things develop.

With the UK officially out of the recession and inflation set to rise, he thinks it was an understandable move.

He added: "Although the MPC may not be relaxing policy any further at the moment, it will not be in any hurry to tighten either."

And Mr Smith stated that a rise in inflation will be temporary as consumers remain in debt, with financial constriction coming.

The news comes after the recent announcement by the Insolvency Service that 35,574 people - or 223 people a day - went into bankruptcy in the quarter that ended 31 December 2009, an increase of 24.9 per cent compared to the same period in 2008.
