Graduates looking to find employment during the recession are being urged to make specific applications, rather than simply employing a scattergun approach in attempting to find work.

Although it can be tempting for people to simply send off the same application to a wide variety of jobs in the hope that some might result in an interview, the Recruitment Society has suggested that taking time over individual applications could prove to be a better approach.

Tax jobs will be among those that are likely to be in high demand among graduates, but with companies choosing to cut back their recruitment programmes, securing a place is becoming increasingly difficult.

Steve Huxham, chairman of the Recruitment Society, said graduates need to think imaginatively about their career destinations and to "make specific rather than hordes of standard applications".

He added: "Educated talent will remain in demand for the foreseeable future - no one should lose sight of that due to short-term media headlines."

Recent figures published by the Association of Graduate Recruiters revealed there is an average of 48 graduates applying for every job this year.
