Businesses can expect more enquiries and investigations from HM Revenue & Customs due to the increased public deficit, it has been suggested.

A survey carried out by Big Four company KPMG has found that 20 per cent of those questioned reported an swell in scrutiny levels on indirect taxes when compared to 12 months ago.

On the topic of income tax, 22 per cent of respondents admitted to receiving greater activity - compared to 12 per cent globally.

Sue Bonney, head of tax at KPMG Europe, noted that developing standardised practices would allow departments to concentrate on effective tax planning and business support.

"They also help facilitate a better and more accurate understanding of tax matters across global organisations, which in turn can add value by improving communications, timeliness and transparency," she added.

A three-stage plan was recently called for by the corporation to help change the public sector as it tried to emerge from the recession.
