Last year witnessed the least amount of mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in the hotel sector for the last ten years, it has been revealed.

Richard Hathaway, head of travel, leisure and tourism at KPMG, noted that the profile of owners has changed radically since previous recessions.

However, appetite for M&As is returning to the industry, but a period of refinancing is likely over the next five years.

Neill Thomas, global head of debt advisory at the company, stated that by the end of the year "meaningful levels" of M&A may begin to take place.

"Building more equity into deals is likely to be a key driver for getting transactions underway," he added.

It was recently reported by the organisation that the transport sector is set to see an increase in the amount of M&As taking place - with the majority of deals to be completed by small and medium-sized enterprises.
