The slump in the UK employment market is showing signs of easing, according to a study conducted by KPMG.

The latest Report on Jobs, which has been produced in partnership with the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), shows that the pace of decline in the sector is beginning to slow, something that may be welcomed by those seeking audit jobs.

Although the number of workers securing positions continued to fall, the drop was at its weakest for 13 months in the permanent sector, while the temporary market saw the smallest fall since September of last year.

REC chief executive Kevin Green suggested that the figures show there are "signs of life" in UK employment.

However, head of business services at KPMG Mike Stevens warned that it is "probably too early to talk about a recovery", noting that some of the improvement may be due to staff working reduced hours instead of being made redundant.

Unemployment in the UK currently stands at 2.26 million, according to data released last month by the Office for National Statistics.
