The next 12 months will prove to be a better year than 2009 for those in audit jobs in the mergers and acquisitions (M&A) industry, according to one firm.

KPMG's Global M&A Predictor has revealed that, although corporate earnings were overestimated last year, 2010 will see business get back on track with up to a seven per cent increase on 2009's revenue figures.

The firm said that earnings forecasts are now looking more sensible than they were 12 months ago and corporate deals and initial public offerings will lead the industry to a modest growth in the future.

Jonathan Stankler, technology partner at KPMG, also suggested that technology would be key to re-setting the M&A sector's performance.

"Coupled with the comparatively low debt levels and, in many cases, sizeable cash piles, it would not be at all surprising to see the technology sector lead the way in driving forward M&A activity on a global basis," he predicted.

The Financial Reporting Council recently claimed that more needs to be done to improve accounting in the M&A sector, saying that companies currently find the process expensive and difficult.
