M&A to increase in transport sector

26/02/2010 M&A to increase in transport sectorThe transport and logistics (T&L) sector is set to see an increase in mergers and acquisitions (M&A's) in 2010, according to one expert.

Dr Ashley Steel, global head for transport at KPMG, noted that there was an appetite in the market, but the majority of deals would probably be in the small and medium-sized enterprises area of industry.

He added: "We will probably see a number of small transactions by buyers focusing on strategic assets of [a] smaller size that can be acquired with less debt and are easier to integrate."

The developments in T&L mirror those of the whole economy, he remarked, with North America still battling the repercussions of the downturn - while Asia continues to grow.

A recent survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers found that M&A activity was likely to improve this year, after 2009 saw it drop to its lowest level in six years with only £70 billion worth of deals completed.
