Reward packages for chief executive officers (CEOs) of local government bodies are approximately half that of their counterparts in the private sector, according to new data from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

Research by the professional services firm revealed that the salaries and benefits of public CEOs are equivalent 51 per cent of the packages received by private executives.

Salary, pensions and bonuses were taken into account for the analysis, although it noted that job satisfaction and a desire to carry out a public service are also factors for local government CEOs.

A typical pay packet in a large local authority is worth £228,000, the report revealed, compared to £447,000 for CEOs of private sector firms or divisions with turnovers of between £500 million and £1,300 million.

"Public perception of local government pay is an issue but, in reality, their packages are considerably lower than their counterparts in other sectors," commented PwC partner and head of local government Steve Beet.

However, a separate report published recently by PwC indicated that private sector workers could find themselves retiring with smaller pensions than public sector staff.
