The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) has re-elected David Alexander, director of forensic services at risk jobs provider Smith & Williamson, as its president.

Commenting on the move, Mr Alexander said that he plans to continue helping businesses in the UK protect themselves from fraud by training more specialist examiners to pass on their expertise in the current economic climate.

"As the effects of the recession are felt more widely, businesses in the UK will undoubtedly suffer the effects of fraud," he explained.

Last year, 292,799 cases of fraudulent scams were reported by various media outlets, an indication that companies will need to be more vigilant as criminal activity increases, it was added.

Smith & Williamson, which has offices in London, Belfast, Bristol and Birmingham, is the eighth largest accounting firm in the UK and helps its private clients achieve their financial aims with its track record of good management and advisory services.
