Those who take a work experience placement must ensure they are not being exploited, an expert has advised.

According to vice president of the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services Elspeth Farrar, those that have recently left university and are looking to gain experience in areas such as tax jobs should not make a written or verbal contract with the firm they are working for.

If this happens and the company sets out specific hours in which the graduate is expected to work, then the business is breaking the minimum wage act.

"I think there have always been some firms who have perhaps had a tendency to take advantage," Ms Farrar remarked, adding that it has to be the students that are "in control" of the hours they work.

Her comments follow a recent survey by the National Council for Work Experience, which revealed that 66 per cent of young people feel obliged to work free-of-charge due to the recession.
