Increasing confidence in the business sector has seen 68 per cent of UK, Aim-listed companies state that their organisation is positive about the prospects of their particular sector.

The figure represents an increase from last year's statistics, when only 30 per cent of groups questioned were optimistic.

Dr Azhic Basirov, head of capital markets at Smith & Williamson, said it was encouraging that a degree of stability had returned to the market, but he remained cautious about the recovery.

He added: "With credit markets settling down and improving investor sentiment, we expect the initial public offering activity level on Aim to increase and remain at a higher sustainable level going forward."

The survey also found that 35 per cent of respondents were recruiting more staff - an upturn compared to the figures last year when 54 per cent noted that they were considering making redundancies.

PricewaterhouseCoopers recently explained that the possibility of a double-dip recession was still real, as political instability and a scarcity of business confidence still existed.
