Will those with tax jobs be affected by government duty proposals?

23/07/2010 Will those with tax jobs be affected by government duty...The government has proposed introducing a stamp duty to be paid by Britons living in homes that are inefficient in order to encourage them to go green.

Those with tax jobs may be interested in the plans recently reported in the Times and the Daily Mail, which are aimed at helping the UK to meets its carbon emissions reductions targets.

Homeowners living in a poorly insulated property or one that has draughty windows or an old boiler could face paying the levy should the proposals go ahead.

However, Vernon Pethard, founder of newhomesforsale.co.uk, said the plans may lead to more people buying a new, greener home, rather than making their existing house more energy efficient.

"Threatening an increase in stamp duty on older, poorly insulated homes is likely to deter people from buying one because it's not always possible to bring them up to the exacting modern standards set by today's brand new homes," he added.

Elsewhere, chancellor George Osborne announced this week his plans to simplify the UK's existing tax code.
